Starting February 21, 2026, the Karimoku Research Center will host an exhibition titled Between Space and Sound under the theme Survey 03: Form Follows Feelings. This project features New York-based audio designer Devon Turnbull and his brand Ojas, focusing on the deep affinity between Turnbull’s acoustic philosophy and the precision of Japanese woodworking. By applying Karimoku Furniture’s advanced three-dimensional processing and veneer techniques to Ojas speaker designs, the partnership has realized new forms of acoustic expression that move beyond mere utility to resonate with human emotion.
The exhibition is organized across three floors to investigate the Japanese concept of Ma, which explores the tension and harmony between space and sound. On the first floor, the Archive gallery features a meditative Sound House modeled after a traditional tea room and finished with a precise dot pattern using Karimoku’s Real Coat technology. In this high-purity acoustic environment, guests can experience the Rokujo speakers while seated on specialized floor chairs. Moving to the second floor, the Materials Lab functions as a public listening room featuring a dynamic speaker system equipped with a large wooden horn. This complex component, typically made of metal, was fully realized in wood through Karimoku’s 3D processing expertise. On the basement floor, the Study area displays the complete collection of speakers—including the Sanjo, Rokujo, and Nurikabe models—presented in pewter grey and pure oak finishes to highlight how different materials transform aesthetic expression.
This exhibition will run until June 5, 2026, at the Karimoku Research Center in Nishiazabu, Tokyo. To celebrate the opening, a special tea ceremony will be held within the Sound House on February 21, offering a rare opportunity to experience the harmony of sound, tea, and space through matcha from Horii Shichimeien and sweets from Shimagashima. Limited edition merchandise, including t-shirts and record bags featuring the exhibition’s key visuals, will also be available for purchase alongside a selection of records curated by the shop Haru no Ame.
