Tokyo’s SAI will host a solo exhibition by ∈Y∋, founder of the experimental band Boredoms, from October 9 to 29, 2025. Titled “mapocy,” the show continues ∈Y∋’s decades-long exploration across music, performance, film, and visual art, fields in which he has consistently expanded the boundaries of expression.
Since forming Boredoms in 1986, ∈Y∋ has played a central role in shaping underground culture worldwide, from opening for Nirvana and collaborating with Sonic Youth to staging the large-scale “77 Boa Drum” in New York and “88 Boa Drum” in Los Angeles. His more recent work includes the multimedia project FINALBY( ) and a live performance closing Osaka’s legendary Misono Universe in 2025. As a visual artist, his practice ranges from Beck’s Midnite Vultures album cover to exhibitions at P.S.1 and major solo presentations such as “RECON” (2019) and “UNATAMITLE” (2023).
For “mapocy,” ∈Y∋ employs plywood in its standard green and yellow tones as a central medium, constructing an installation of LEDs, cymbals, and large wooden frames. The work draws on automata and cellular automata theory to generate a shifting interplay of matter, sound, and light, unfolding with mandala-like complexity. The exhibition invites visitors into an emergent dimensional space that challenges perceptions of time, synchronization, and states of being.
An opening reception will be held on October 8 from 18:00 to 20:00 at SAI, located in Rayard Miyashita Park, Shibuya.
