Japanese department store operator Hands has officially announced the upcoming closure of its landmark flagship location in Shibuya, scheduled to cease retail operations in November 2026. The strategic decision stems directly from the upcoming expiration of the building’s long-standing real estate lease agreement. Established on September 9, 1978, in the Udagawa-cho sector, the monumental lifestyle retail hub has maintained a continuous presence for over forty-eight years, anchoring the historical development of Tokyo’s specialized DIY and creative craftsmanship subcultures.
The expansive architectural facility spans a total sales floor area of approximately 5,494 square meters and houses roughly 100,000 active product varieties. Built to navigate Shibuya’s steep natural hillside topography, the interior features a signature multi-level layout divided into twenty-four distinct split-floors connected by a spiral staircase totaling 408 steps. This unique layout purposefully offered visitors an engaging labyrinth-like environment designed to celebrate the tactile joy of physical exploration, a feature highly favored by generations of designers and makers.
To honor its final months of service, the storefront has launched the specialized Seikatsu Henshu Zukan project, transforming each floor into an interactive analog guide filled with experiential curation. The corporate team, led by President Satoru Sakurai, emphasized that while this brick-and-mortar hub will close, the staff’s insights and specialized retail philosophy will be inherited across the brand’s ninety-eight domestic and international locations. Hands Shibuya intends to execute a series of grand finale events, maintaining its traditional customer engagement practices until its final day of service.
